TRIP ITINERARY/MISCELLANEOUS:

10:30am            Arrive Manhattan, NYC & drop off group at Macy’s - on 34th St. between 6th and 7th Ave.

Macy’s covers an entire block between 6th and 7th Avenues. The city’s most famous, and the world’s largest, department store, it containing 300 departments on 11 floors with over 2 million square feet of selling space. The main floor has been refurbished in the original Art Deco style of the 1930s. On any given day about 30,000 people walk through the doors. Macy’s was established by whaling sailor Rowland Macy; this Herald Square location was established in 1902. Livestock was sold out of the main floor, but, equipped with the world’s first modern escalators, Macy’s introduced a new consumer phenomenon: vertical shopping, in which customers were transported from floor to floor of merchandise. You can still ride these magical steps today. Another promotional innovation was the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, started in 1924. During its first decade, the large helium balloons for which the parade is known nationwide were released into the air and recovered by the public for prizes. The store was the first retailer to promote such products as the Idaho baked potato and colored bath towels.
