12:45pm Arrive at the Gettysburg Visitor Center & Museum Gettysburg has always been a "must see" for every American. With the opening of the new Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park on April 14, 2008, it became a "must do" for those who have visited before as well as those who have yet to come. The 139,000-square-foot Museum and Visitor Center contains 11 state-of-the-art exhibit galleries, and will use a greater variety of objects and artifacts from Gettysburg National Military Park’s extensive collection — and from other museums and private collections from around the country — to offer perspective, and a greater appreciation for the sacrifices of those who became a part of the greatest battle ever fought in North America.
1:00pm The Gettysburg Cyclorama and the film, A New Birth of Freedom The massive "Battle of Gettysburg" Cyclorama immerses visitors in the sights and sounds of Pickett's Charge, the climactic struggle during the three-day Battle of Gettysburg. Recently reopened after the largest conservation effort on the continent, the Cyclorama experience is now able to be viewed the way its artist originally intended in 1884, a sight that caused many battle veterans to weep. The Cyclorama experience includes the film, A New Birth of Freedom. Freedom–one small word that changed the course of human history. In the Gettysburg Address, given just a few short months after the epic battle, President Abraham Lincoln called for "a new birth of freedom," and consequently redfined the United States. Today, we cherish our freedoms, and we can never forget how they were born–out of sacrifice, bravery and devotion to a purpose larger than self. The events that unfolded at Gettysburg in 1863 speak to us today with a relevance that is humbling and, to some, shocking. It is here, at Gettysburg, that we are reminded that freedom, like power, will always be contested. And it is here that we, ourselves, are called to "a new birth of freedom," inspired to protect and defend all that we hold dear.
Free time to view Gettysburg National Military Park Museum
