Most transportation on the island is by tram, golf cart, bicycle or foot. We’ll enjoy an included Train Tour of the island, including stops at Heineman’s Winery and Crystal Cave, Stonehenge Estate and Perry Peace Monument. Once you are settled in the Tour Train, our Driver will take you on the first half of your narrated island tour. You will have a photo opportunity at both the South Bass Island Lighthouse as well as Perry’s International Peace Memorial. He will point out a lot of interesting sites on the island and you will learn a little bit about the early settlers of Put-in-Bay and their agriculture, as well as the importance of the island during the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lake Erie. You will learn about the booming tourism industry on the island in the 19th century, not unlike today’s busy season. Ground was broken in 1912 for the building, and the first presidential library/museum in the U.S. opened in 1916 funded by the State of Ohio and Webb C. Hayes. Major additions in 1922 and 1968 brought the building to its present configuration of exhibit galleries (two floors), research library (one floor), and storage areas (four floors) comprising 52,640 square feet.
